Art Smart

I'll cover two major things that've helped me a lot.

1.GET COMMISSIONED

Okay, so, if you've ever wondered about getting commissioned, just know to TAKE IT SLOW! Your artwork isn't going anywhere, and neither are people in need of an artist. Getting yourself out there takes time and dedication, and I don't just mean online. People you know are a great place to start.

Say for instance you're showing just one picture, or maybe even a portfolio. You'll be surprised at how many will ask you those three special words, "are you interested?".

Trust me guys, this works!

Here's a list of the commissions I've been asked to do. And guess what? They're all people I know and interact with.
1. a portrait of a couple.
2. A mural of flowers on a barn.
3. A painting of a barn with cows.
4. "Paint anything you want-just do it".
5. Drawing of a log cabin.
...and...
6. "I want you to do a painting for me".

Work can be found anywhere. I would never turn an offer down unless its
for good reasons. A person could always recommend you. And hey, that would be getting yourself out there, right?

2. SEARCH IT OUT

Sometimes information falls into your lap, and you don't have to lift a finger. I'm hear to tell you to snap out of it. More often than "sometimes" things are going on behind the scenes that many aspiring artists don't know about, because they aren't "searching it out". Researching things for yourself is one of the most effective ways to get started.
Grab a copy of 2010 Artist's and Graphic Designer's Market (pictured above). It's available on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/) Barnes and Noble, and I'm sure many other bookstores. Google-ing is also a great way to seek out info. In it, you'll find out where and how to sell your fine art, illustrations, and cartoons. If you don't want to sell your work, there's loads more stuff in it that will help you with anything! Also, know that photography is an art form, too. There's a Photographers Market, a Children's Writers and Illustrators Market--the list goes on. Here's some great sites you should check out. Even if you don't become a member of any of them, its still a good idea to browse and see what you find! (And remember to take notes.)

Below I added a painting in progress.
It's going to be some of the characters from
my book. So far I only have two started, and
they're just heads! So, yeah...lots of work to
be done.
